Here’s my take on the Email Marketing insights from the infographic + Actionable Tips:

1- Write Short Subject Lines

This is as simple as it sounds.

According to industry studies, 82% of Marketers Send Emails With Subject Lines of 60 Characters or Less…

Here’s the bottom line:

The shorter the subject line

The better it will be for your email campaigns…

Here’s why :

Shorter email subject lines results in:

  • Higher Open Rates.
  • More Curiosity.
  • Are Mobile optimized (More on that later)

Ideally, your subject lines should be no more than 60 characters…

For example, here’s an example of what a bad subject line looks like :

Long Email Subject line

In Fact, this subject line is 84 characters!

Which is too long…

Now, look at this example.

short email subject line

With that,

let’s keep it going…

[bctt tweet="82% of Marketers Send Emails With Subject
Lines of 60 Characters or Less..."]

2-Optimizing For Mobile Users.

This is very important…

Mobile opens accounted for 46 percent of all email opens.

46% percent!

That’s almost half the percentage of all emails received by prospects and customers.

Now, you might already figure out what I’m about to say next:

Yes. You must optimize your emails for mobile!

The question is how? am glad you asked

Here are a few tips:

Mobile email Marketing
[bctt tweet="Mobile opens accounted for

3-The Widespread Usage of Email.

Who said email is dead?

Statistics shows:

Global email users amounted to 3.7 billion users,

And that’s not all :

This figure is set to grow to 4.3 billion users in 2022

What does this mean for marketers that are looking to take advantage of this?

Well, there’s good and bad news?

Here’s the bad:

Email Subscribers will have multiple email addresses. (even old ones).

Which will result in harder to reach subscribers?

That’s the bad, ready for the good news:

A bigger audience through Email Marketing…

So here are a few tips for you:

  • Ensure to use double Optin forms to avoid fake email addresses
  • Give consumers incentives for keeping brands in the loop when creating new email addresses.
  • Regularly go through your lists and remove old email addresses.
[bctt tweet="Global email users amounted to 3.7 billion users,

4- Email Open Rate Across All Industries.

Let’s admit it :

It’s hard to get people to open your emails… (at least for me.)

And there’s data to back it up.

The average open rate is 20.81%.According to an open rate benchmark research done by Mailchimp

Now that might sound discouraging.

(I think so too…)

You can take the actions to ensure you get the best open rates.

  • Write engaging subject lines.
  • Segment your list carefully.
  • Avoid spam filters.
  • Send at the right time.
Increase email open rates

5-Personalize Your Emails.

Let me know if this ever happened to you…

You log in to your email inbox:

And immediately you see your name in the subject line of an email.

Like this:

Personalize emails

That’s the power of personalization…

Here is some customer information that you can use to personalize your emails.

  • name
  • postal location
  • birthday
  • current location
  • social media accounts

You can also use any other information that might make the email more personalized.

For example, you can talk about a previous product the subscriber purchased.

Using an Autoresponder like Active Campaign can make the process of personalizing your emails a breeze…

Note: Email Personalization is all about building relationships with your email subscribers and helping them achieve their goals while driving higher engagement.

6-Billions of Emails Are Sent Daily.

Email campaigns are being sent the moment you read this.

In fact :

Data from Statista reveals the number of emails received and sent out, will surpass 347 billion per day by 2022.

Now that’s a lot of emails per day,

So with that out of the way, marketers need to take the necessary steps to ensure their emails stand out in subscriber’s inbox…

Here are a few steps to take…

1- Avoid Spam words

To ensure your emails are delivered to the inbox avoid using Spam Words In your email copy.

Spam words include:

  • 100% free
  • Giving it away
  • Web traffic
  • Please read
  • Will not believe your eyes

2- Use Email Subject Lines Relevant to Subscribers.

In order to send the most relevant emails to the right subscribers on your list is to use Smart Segmentations with your autoresponder…

I personally use Active Campaign. which allows you to control the way subscriber’s messages are personalized.

3- Split testing Emails…

Another way to ensure you are sending the right emails is to do A/B split testing.

Ideally, you want to split test things like:

  • Email Subject lines
  • Call to actions
  • Email body copy.
  • Etc

Note: Not all Email marketing tools allow split testing.

Here are a few that allow this feature :

[bctt tweet="Emails received and sent out,

7-Welcome Emails Have a High Open Rate.

Your welcome email sequence should be the most important email that subscribers receive from you.

Because they have the highest open Rate!

welcome emails

Welcome emails also generate  320% more revenue than other marketing messages.

With that being said if you don’t have a welcome email sequence you should set up one to take advantage of this.

If you are stuck and don’t know what to write for you welcome email series you can use DripScrips

[bctt tweet="Welcome emails also generate 320%

8-  Send Cart Abandonment Emails

If you’re like me you leave stuff in your online shopping cart all the time…

And to make it worst most times I never return to finish that purchase…

It happens!

For one reason or another.

But in the eyes of a marketer, this is bad.

But there’s a solution…

Shopping cart abandonment emails.

Data from SaleCycle shows Shopping cart abandonment emails sent within an hour boost conversions By 6.33%…

Imagine getting 6.33% of the visitors to finish their purchase that was abandoned.

Crazy right?.

Here’s a simple technique that almost always works for abandoned cart emails.

That’s it…

Sometimes customers just need a reason to make that purchase right now…

So using a bit of urgent will get the job done.

You can do this by adding a countdown timer in your emails…

Another way you can use urgency is to send a discount code in your emails which will expire at a specific time.

[bctt tweet="Shopping cart abandonment emails sent within

9- Promotional Emails Influence Purchase Decisions…

From time to time you should send offers to your email list…

Don’t be afraid to promote stuff to your audience.

That’s why they signed up for your email list

They want to hear from you and buy your stuff.

It gets better :

Recent Report shows: 68% of millennials say promotional emails have influenced their purchase decisions…

Promotional emails stats

Just to keep in mind,

When it comes to Promotional Emails:
As a rule.

I learned from the book Written by Chad S. White

  1. thank you so much for this!! This is really helpful and I know I been doing something really wrong.. For example, I think I actually used the “spam-words” alot of time and I did not even know that I was..

Also, I never thought about cell phones. This was truly an eye-opener.
I will keep looking into your site to learn more!

    • Great… Mobile is getting more and more popular these days. In fact, I get a lot of emails that I can’t really real on my mobile because they are not optimized for mobile device.

  2. Great post on email marketing, the stats were quite impressive. It is something I need to get started on after reading this I think. I know it makes sense to build a list of potential customers.

The 68% of millenials stat was eye opening. I need to set up a campaign as soon as possible.

    Thanks for the info,

    • Thanks Frank. glad you learned something new. that stats also surprise me as well its one of the reason I included it in the article.

  3. Very niteresting infographic you have here…

I enjoyed reading it.  I noted a few of the things I am doing correctly in my email campaign, like short subject lines.

You also mentioned the best time to send out emails.  If I am doing a PPC campaign, I normally send out emails in the morning and evening.  I am also hoping to acquire a high Click Through Rate and a lower bounce rate.  This will take some time to get proficient at, but I will work on it…

Thanks for sharing this, you really made me think!

  4. Nice statistics there about email marketing. Email marketing is much alive today and it will continue to be getting better by the day.

It doesn’t matter what follower-ship you have on social media, those list aren’t yours, twitter can wake up one day and close your account. Then you’re going to lose all the followers you had on twitter.

Your email list however is yours to use the way you like. And it is your biggest asset because you can use it to make money literally on demand.

Your advice to inculcate email marketing into ones marketing strategies if it wasn’t being used is timely and thanks for the checklist that will help implement email marketing in one’s business the right way.

My #1 takeaway from the post is the ROI of $38 for every $1 spent on email marketing. Those figures caught my attention.

    • Its definitely an eye opener to see how much email marketing is growing these days.

I also agree that an email list is one of the best asset to have for your online business these days.

  5. great post, I took notes! Had not really thought of using email but as you have clearly shown, it is a good tool if used properly.
I loved the charts and graphs as well as the actionable tips you put with each point.
But what really made this a high quality training post is that after you finished your points, you went through each of them again explaining in detail exactly what the points meant.
I needed that because there were terms I was not familiar with.
    excellent information, thank you.

  6. What a nice post you wrote! I really enjoyed reading it and I could not be silent about your post so I decided to leave my comment here and say Thank You! For sharing this quality post with others.
Actually this is exactly the information that I was looking for information about the email marketing strategies and when I landed on your website and read this post, it answered all my questions in details.

I will come back to your website again for sure and I’m looking forward to reading your new posts.)

  7. Thank you for such an informative post on email marketing. I’ve picked up so many useful tips that I didn’t think about. I like the idea of following up cart abandonment. I’ve often changed my mind just before making a purchase, so it makes sense. I never really understood the ratio of promotional emails to useful content and your post has helped.

    • Promotional Emails is mostly up to the type email list that you have… not all emails are collected equally..
meaning persons might just sign up to your email list because they love the content you provide…
that’s why its a good idea to segment your email list.
